Review: Rescue Me, Maybe by Jackie Bouchard
Note: This ARC was provided by Lake Union Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Jane Bailey has had to say goodbye to the man she was married to and to the dog that she loved within a matter of weeks. Now, she says goodbye to Philadelphia and makes her way back to the only place she's considered home--San Diego. But she's called upon to help out her aunt and uncle who need her to help out at the bed and breakfast in Arizona they own while they're away. Soon, she's distracted by the menagerie of guests, the good-looking jerk of a handyman/neighbor, her friendship with the B&B's only employee, and the dog she swore not to fall in love with. You know what they say about best-laid plans...
Rescue Me, Maybe by Jackie Bouchard is the story of a thirty-seven-year-old woman who is dealing with the devastating loss of her beloved dog as well as the death of her husband, though she is more deeply affected by one over the other. Jane Bailey's story is one that proves that the only constant in life is change, beginning with her whirlwind love affair with the man she ends up marrying six months later and then the plans for her life after his death. Jane isn't always an easy main character to like but she goes through her growing pains as best she can and learns lessons that are taught by a cute dog named Maybe.
If there's one thing that I must say about Jane's journey, it's that she's painfully honest about it. She may keep secrets and make lies of omission, but when she writes down her lists or takes time to think about what's going on with her life, she doesn't hide the truth. Sometimes, she's blissfully unaware and it takes time for her to get to certain truths but she does acknowledge them, even when she's tempted to run away from them. That's what makes Jane feel real--she's far from perfect and can be frustratingly closed-off to everyone except the dogs in her life and I see a lot of myself in her, so I kinda get where she's coming from.
This book, which was originally published independently in 2013 and is being re-released two years later, may not give you the happily-ever-after that you expect, but what it does give you is an open-ended ending filled with hope for Jane's future. This is also my very first Jackie Bouchard read and while I did originally go into it because there was a dog on the cover, I'm happy to say that I was satisfied and entertained. I've got House Trained on my scheduled list of reviews and hope to read What the Dog Ate soon. If you like your heroines strong and independent and love dogs in fiction, check out Rescue Me, Maybe. 4.5 stars! ♥
