Review: Tall, Dark and Immortal by Cat Devon (Entity #4)

Note: This ARC was provided by St. Martin's Press in exchange for an honest review.

Alex Sanchez is one of Chicago's finest--both in terms of being a police detective and a vampire. When an insistent Keira Turner confronts him about the rash of thefts involving harvested blood, he's stunned when she tells him that she knows he's a vampire. The last thing he needs is her hounding him but when her safety is threatened by a rival group of vampires, Alex provides sanctuary for the granddaughter of the most legendary vampire hunter ever known. Unfortunately, Keira's presence in Vamptown creates complications and threatens security, Alex may have to choose between his oath as a vampire to the other members of the town that he considers home or his feelings for a woman who could very well be The One.

Tall, Dark and Immortal is the fourth full-length novel in the Cat Devon-penned paranormal romance series Entity. This book is being posthumously released after the author, whose real name was Cathie Linz Baumgardner was an award-winning romance novelist who also wrote under the name Cathie Linz and was a former librarian, passed away on March 7, 2015. I'm assuming this is the final book in what's proven to be a fun and intense series and if so, it certainly ended on a high note, with a story that was action-packed and filled with romantic tension and left the main characters from all five books in the series in their respective happy places. This was an easy read and one that had me feeling satisfied from start to finish.

Alex Sanchez and Keira Turner are distrustful of each other for a good portion of the story, though their mutual attraction distracts them from the occasional barbs and accusations of nefarious acts. Alex being a vampire that Keira's vampire hunter grandfather once had on his list makes for an interesting twist in the story, though I do wish it had been tackled further. They were feisty and fiercely independent, and yet had such love and loyalty for those that mattered to them the most. While the spotlight remains on Alex and Keira throughout the book, it did feel like an ensemble piece, one that had all the past pairings in more prominent appearances, and I actually liked it because it did give this the feeling of being a series ender.

There are a couple of curious element to the series that gives it a uniqueness: that of none of the non-vampires being turned in order to ensure a happily-ever-after for the rest of eternity. Yes, their lives changed but with everything that they had already gone through, I liked that the author didn't feel the need for them to undergo drastic transformations in order to suit one entity's needs or wants. Even though the male vampires are quite alpha, there's this softness that overcomes them when they finally open themselves to the possibility of being with the women they've fallen for. Tall, Dark and Immortal more than met my expectations and I'll definitely miss Vamptown and its inhabitants. This gets four stars. ♥
