Review: Can't Wait by Jennifer Ryan (Montana Men #0.5)

It's clear to everyone that Caleb Bowden and Summer Turner have feelings that go beyond friendship and would be perfect together. Everyone, that is, except Jack Turner, Summer's older brother and Caleb's best friend. Out of respect for his friendship with the man who saved his life while they were serving together in Iraq, Caleb has decided to not pursue anything romantic with Summer, much to her disappointment. After all, one doesn't go after his best friend's sister...even if she's the woman he wants to be with forever.

Can't Wait is the prequel novella to the Montana Men series from bestselling author Jennifer Ryan and was originally part of the All I Want for Christmas is a Cowboy anthology. Here we meet Caleb Bowden and Summer Turner, two people who have very mutual feelings for one another, but Caleb's loyalty to Summer's brother Jack prevents him from wanting more than friendship with Summer. Even though what they feel is beyond a mere crush or even purely lust, Caleb chooses his friendship with Jack over Summer.

You can't help but feel bad for both Caleb and Summer because it's pretty clear that they're more than in like with each other. I did feel worse for Summer than Caleb because it's heartbreaking to know that the man you're in love with doesn't want to take the risk required to be with you. Had either of them broached the idea of becoming a couple with Jack, then maybe they would have been spared all that wasted time and wistfulness. This was a short but sweet read and a pretty good series starter. Can't Wait gets four stars. ♥
