Review: Candy Hearts by Erin McLellan (So Over the Holidays #2)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via A Novel Take PR.

I liked the first So Over the Holidays novella, Stocking Stuffers, but this second one has me as happy as a clam at high tide. From Christmas, we move on to the next notable holiday, which is Valentine's, and Candy Hearts features the next Holiday sibling, Benjamin, a twenty-four-year-old mechanic with a penchant for lace and satin. Being buff and liking the kind of undergarments that he does leads to a whole lot of frustration on his end given that not everyone gets who he really is. So, the whole Valentine's Day thing? Pffft. Not interested; instead, Benji is more than ready to spend some time with family and friends in order to not ring in the holiday. But then he meets William O'Dare, a career-driven man ten years his senior who has sacrificed his personal relationships in order to make a success of his business. Neither one was expecting the chemistry, but maybe pretending to be secret valentines is just what they need. What happens, though, when the secret is out and it all begins to feel real?

I loved the connection between William and Benji, and how they were what the other needed without wholly realizing it. There's a lot that goes on, and given that it's a novella, I tip my hat to the author for successfully writing a story that doesn't feel like it was rushed or missing anything. The sex is as hot as I expected it to be, but I also appreciated the more intimate moments where their relationship quietly shifted into far more than either one had ever planned. There's great banter between the two of them, and I liked the connections they had with the supporting cast of characters as well. It was fun catching up with Sasha, who just happens to be Benji's sister, and Perry from the first book, Stocking Stuffers. Now, that doesn't mean you necessarily need to read the books in order or the series starter at all. You can very much jump into this new release and enjoy it fully as a standalone. Candy Hearts snags five stars.
