Review: The Initiation by Nikki Sloane (Filthy Rich Americans #1)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Social Butterfly PR.

I already know how well Nikki Sloane can write romantic comedy, but with the release of The Initiation, she's made it clear that she damn well knows how to write dark romance as well. This is the first novel in Sloane's new Filthy Rich Americans series and it is, indeed, about American families who belong to the highly exclusive echelon in society where money is no object and everything--and everyone--has a price. At the very peak of that financial and societal mountaintop is none other than the Hale family, the owner of Hale Banking and Holding. In order to become part of the financial institution's board, rumors abound that a secretive and sordid initiation takes place, a rite that involves a lone woman and several men. Maybe it's true, maybe it isn't, but Marist Northcutt knows one thing: to save her family and everything they own, she'll sell herself to the man who wants to own her--Royce Hale.

This is one of those reviews of mine where I need to be consciously aware about what I write because I don't want to be the asshat who spoils it for future readers. Yeah, yeah, I know there are some out there like me--I don't necessarily mind spoilers, but out of respect for both the author and those who prefer experiencing books as they read them, I'm staying mum and simply doing my bit to encourage you to pick up this book and read it. Nikki Sloane made sure this book had its twists and turns and then some because that cliffhanger was in the class reserved for endings that have my mouth hanging open in shock and then wanting to fling my tablet to the ground because the next book isn't available for me to get answers as of yet. Marist and Royce have the whole love-hate thing down pat, although I think it's fair to say that a good portion of the book was more lust-hate than anything else. I was intrigued and entertained and now we must wait for The Obsession which is three and a half months away, a test of my already short in supply patience, so fingers crossed it'll be worth it! Five stars for The Initiation. ♥
