Review: Unexpected Bond by Kaylee Ryan (Unexpected Arrivals #4)

Kaylee Ryan returns to her Unexpected Arrivals series with the fourth novel, Unexpected Bond. If you're familiar with the series, you'll know that this is a rather angsty collection of novels, not that I'm complaining considering how much of an angst addict I am. For those who are new to either the author or the series, each book covers a different couple BUT there are recurring characters throughout because the series is about a close-knit circle of lifelong friends who all work together and find love and hope even in the most trying of times. So my suggestion shouldn't come as a surprise, especially if you're familiar with my thing about book series: Read the books in order.
Unexpected Bond is the story of holding on to love and family when faced with one of life's greatest trials. It's the story of Seth Jennings, who meets single mother Mara Reyes during a get-together with friends and from that moment forward, the beginnings of a life-changing bond are set in motion. Over the next six months, they keep in touch through text messages, and when Mara and her daughter, Finley, move to Seth's hometown, it feels as if everything is falling into place for them. Then everyone's world is knocked off its axis and lives are changed forever.
I shed tears over this book. I thought I knew what direction it was going to take, but it veered off the course I believed it was on and take me on an unexpected journey. There was one part of the story line that broke my heart even though I knew that it was a necessary "evil". Even amidst the heartache, there was the underlying theme of never losing hope--to focus on the good and make the very best of memories to carry with us regardless of where life may lead us. I can't say what specifically it was about the story that resonated with me because that would be spoilery, but what I can say is that this book became a gentle reminder of something I'm still trying to come to grips with this year--that blessings come in unexpected ways. Unexpected Bond wasn't just Seth and Mara's story, but it was the story of their family--the one they were born into and the one they have created for themselves. Five stars. ♥
