Audiobook Review: From Ashes by K.M. Neuhold, narrated by Kenneth Obi (Heathens Ink #3)

Note: This audiobook was provided by the author via Michelle Slagan PA in exchange for an honest review.

I read From Ashes in August of last year, and this third book, alongside the two before it and the one that came after, is part and parcel of why the Heathens Ink series was one of my favorite discoveries of 2017. To learn that the first three books are already available in audiobook form had me wanting to find out how the stories would translate from reading them on my tablet to listening to them through my speakers. From Ashes was my third listen (because I'm such a stickler for not just reading but also listening to books in order), and it's got a different narrator than Rescue Me and Going Commando. So, how did K.M. Neuhold's writing fare with Kenneth Obi's voice?

It's been eight years since twenty-eight-year-old tattoo artist and owner of Heathens Ink Adam Truman lost his younger brother, but the feelings of mourning and guilt still weigh on him. Maybe he could have done more to save Johnny, to make him see that there were other options. Maybe if he shared his secret, his brother would have seen that he wasn't alone. When Adam meets a young man online nicknamed "Phoenix", they become good friends. But even with the witty and deep exchanges, Adam recognizes Phoenix's need for help. Then Phoenix disappears. A year later, Adam meets twenty-two-year-old Lennox Dalton, and there's something about him that feels familiar.

I already knew I loved the story because I'd read the book last year, but not all books translate well when they're narrated. Thank goodness that wasn't the case with From Ashes, making it par for the course with the first two audiobooks. Kenneth Obi took K.M. Neuhold's story about two men who form an online connection that turns out to be even more potent in person and gave it even more life than I thought possible. I tend to worry when the narrator changes in a series, but I had nothing to worry about here because the combination of Neuhold and Obi worked seamlessly well. The From Ashes audiobook gets five out of five stars and it's three for three for the series. ♥
