Skye Warren takes readers back to Tanglewood with the latest novella set in this fictional world she's created and that we can't quite get enough of. If you've read any of the previous books, particularly the Endgame trilogy and the Masterpiece duet, then you may remember Anders Sorenson. He's the on-call doctor for men like Gabriel Miller and Damon Scott. He's excellent at what he does and he's discreet, but he's never been someone who's wanted to get close to anyone. That is, until he meets a mysterious woman who piques his curiosity, but when his prized chess piece that was supposed to go up for auction is stolen overnight, he can't help but wonder what role the same woman may have played in the crime. He finds Natalie Lhuirs, a twenty-four-year-old graduate student, badly injured. He helps mends her wounds and tends to her. He needs her to get better, but he has no intention of letting her go because he needs her. She's the key to getting the chess piece back...and maybe getting answers that have long eluded Anders. By the end, however, will Anders find the chess piece but then lose his heart to Natalie?

I was quite excited when I found out that Skye Warren had a new story to tell in her Tanglewood book universe. There's always been something dark about the town of Tanglewood, and it's evident in the stories that have come from there. However, there are those moments when the light shines through, particularly when the unlikeliest of couples find each other and fall in love along the way. That's exactly what happens with Anders and Natalie. For the record, there's far more than what the blurb implies. Yes, there's a theft that occurs, one that ties Anders and Natalie even further after their initial meeting, but these two have their respective back stories that have led them down the paths they were on before they intersect. I loved seeing how everything came together, with all the puzzle pieces clicking into place. The cameo appearances of Gabriel and Avery Miller (the Endgame books) and Damon and Penny Scott (the Masterpiece books) were bonuses as far as I was concerned because I absolutely loved their stories. The Bishop was a rather satisfying return to Tanglewood, and I cannot wait for more. 4.5 stars! ♥
