Review: High Stakes by Freya Barker (High Mountain Trackers #2)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Buoni Amici Press.

Two books in, and Freya Barker's High Mountain Trackers series continues to impress. High Stakes delivers another great romantic suspense read, this time with Fletcher Boone and Antonella Freling as the main characters. Fletch is forty-seven and a professional tracker who came highly recommended, but Nella thinks the guy needs an attitude adjustment. The forty-three-year-old Canadian has traveled all the way from Cranbrook, British Columbia to Libby, Montana in hopes of finding her younger sister. Missing for nearly two weeks, Nella knows this is more than a case of her sister going off the grid. She isn't getting much help from the authorities, and Fletch doesn't seem all that eager to help. What's a desperate woman to do? Do it herself, of course, but that's easier said than done, and Fletch decides that doing what he does best is way better than seeing Nella court trouble, but then she could very well be the sort of trouble that he can't quite resist.

Goodness but how I enjoyed the heck out of the push and pull and back and forth going on between Nella and Fletch! I loved that Nella spoke her mind and didn't hesitate to put Fletch in his place whenever she felt it necessary. Having said that, he also didn't hold back and nudging her out of her comfort zone, and once he realized that she was someone worth putting his heart on the line for, there was no denying that he was all in. These two had the whole romance thing down pat, but let's not forget that this is a romantic suspense read, so what about the suspense? Well, that centered around Nella's missing sister, Fillippa (aka Pippa), and everything surrounding her disappearance. I had my list suspects, and let's just say that I was thrown for a loop when everything was revealed. I love it when that happens because it simply means that the author kept me on my toes. All in all, Freya Barker maintains the momentum she set with High Meadow and sets the bar high yet again for High Ground. High Stakes is a must-read and garners five stars.
