Review: Perfect Secret by Molly McLain (Mason Creek #12)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

Perfect Secret is the twelfth and final book in the multi-authored Mason Creek series, and it's from bestselling author Molly McLain. This is a fake relationship romance, which admittedly, is not one my go-to romance tropes. It takes quite a bit of fantastic storytelling for me to fall head over heart for this trope, but McLain just happens to be one of those authors whose writing clicks with me. This turned out to be a really good read, ending the series on a high, and leaving me eager to catch up on the eight books I have yet to peruse.

This is Alana Faulkner and Holden McMurray's story. She's the twenty-five-year-old manager of Mason Creek Market, and he's a twenty-seven-year-old champion bull rider. When Holden's career takes a hit after a false accusation is made against him, clearing his name wasn't enough, what with him remaining suspended. A much needed break is what has him working as a ranch hand in Mason Creek. The last thing he needs is to fall for Alana, especially since she hates bull riders and their relationship is all for show for now.

This was a pretty easygoing read, although it does have a hint of angst to it, particularly with regards to Alana's history and resulting aversion to cowboys and bull riders. I appreciated how Holden went about wooing Alana, pushing her out of her comfort zone but also not rushing her. They were exactly what each one didn't realize they needed, and I enjoyed seeing them go from fake to real. I loved their chemistry and the character development, and with Molly McLain's fab writing, Perfect Secret was a four-starred read.
