Review: Breaking Without You by Carrie Ann Ryan (Fractured Connections #1)

Bestselling author Carrie Ann Ryan starts off her Fractured Connections series with Breaking Without You, the second chance love story of Violet Knight--whose brother is Mace Knight from Fallen Ink, the first book in the Montgomery Ink: Colorado Springs series--and Cameron Connolly. It's been about seven years since the man she loved walked without a word of goodbye or explanation, and just a few days ago, one of Violet's best friends, Allison, decided to take her own life without leaving a note or any of her family and friends having an inkling as to what would have pushed her to do such a thing. Now, Cam is back, but he isn't getting the warmest of welcome: not from his ex-girlfriend nor from his brothers--his twin brother, Aiden, and his foster brother Brendon. While his return is due to wanting to help run the brewery and bar their parents owned, Cam knows he needs to make amends for the way he left years ago. Cam struggles to reconnect with Violet and his brothers and vice-versa, but together, they're forced to deal with years lost and the loss of a bright light that was Allison in each of their lives.

Carrie Ann Ryan has always had a bit of angst included in her stories, but this new series starter of hers felt heavier than any of her past books that I've read, and I, for one, am certainly not complaining. From the heartrending beginning to a highly satisfying ending, Breaking Without You was a beautifully written story about love lost and found, lifelong friendships, questions that will never have answers, and family bonds that go beyond blood. There was a lot of back and forth between Cam and the people he had basically abandoned when he left Colorado seven years prior. The anger and hurt were things that were easy for me to understand and empathize with, and that made this story feel more realistic because real life isn't simple or only filled with positive thoughts and emotions. This was also a great introduction to the rest of the cast of characters that will be getting their own stories as the Fractured Connections series moves forward. While this may be part of the author's Montgomery Ink book universe, it can absolutely be read as a standalone. Five stars and high recommendations for Breaking Without You. ♥
