Review: The Perfect First by Maya Hughes (Fulton U #1)

The Perfect First may be the first book in the Fulton U series but it isn't my first Maya Hughes; it is, however, my current favorite from her, giving the oft-employed virgin looking for someone to be her first and making it more transactional in order to get the deed done as soon as possible a fresh feel all thanks to strong creative writing and an original take on the trope. This is the sort of new adult (NA) romance read that deserves to be noticed because it stands out in the best ways possible and leaves me hopeful for what else Hughes could have up her sleeve as the Fulton U moves forward because the series has been set quite high.

Eighteen-year-old Persephone Alexander is a math genius who is socially awkward and wants to be cured of her virginity. She's poring over potential, umm, cherry poppers when twenty-two-year-old fellow student and football star Reece Michaels overhears her interview process. While Reece doesn't sign up to be among Seph's possible choices, but his curiosity is piqued, and now, he wants to be her personal guide while ticking off almost all the items on her list of firsts. The one thing he doesn't need to deal with is her virginity, but the closer they become, the more he wants to be her first and her last. Both Reece and Seph had their futures all planned out before they met; will either of them change those plans for someone they never expected to ever fall in love with? Can the gawky whiz and the cocky jock get to their happy ending?

Seph and Reece had me totally rooting for them from the moment they had that extraordinary meet-cute of theirs. Okay, maybe it was more awkward than cute, but talk about making an impression on each other and on me. There was so much about Seph that I could relate to, and while she may not have been this worldly woman filled with poise and grace, there was something special about her--an honesty and awareness that made her so darn easy to like. With Reece, well, let's just say I wasn't all that impressed with him in the beginning, but the guy more than won me over, especially because there wasn't anything nefarious about him. I loved getting to know these two and their story. The Perfect First garners five stars. ♥
