Review: Coming Home by Wendy Smith (Copper Creek #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Give Me Books Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

Coming Home is a second chance love story and the first novel in the contemporary romance series entitled Copper Creek from author Wendy Smith. Set in the fictional town of Copper Creek in New Zealand, readers are introduced to Lily Parker and Adam Campbell and the painful circumstances of a relationship that came to an end when they were both eighteen only to have Adam's return to his hometown open the door to not just the possibility of a reconciliation but to secrets finally surfacing and for all the wrongs over twelve years to be righted.

Lily Parker and Adam Campbell may have only been eighteen but they were very much in love and knew what they wanted and that was to spend the rest of their lives together. However, their wedding never pushed through. Adam believed Lily didn't want him and Lily never had a chance to explain. He made sure to get as far away as the one place that held all the memories he shared with the girl who broke his heart and the more he learned about how she had moved on with her life, the longer he kept his distance. Until one phone call has Adam coming home.

It's been a dozen years and the boy she loved may have grown into a man, but the feelings Lily Parker felt for Adam Campbell are still very much alive. Now, though, her life doesn't revolve around him anymore; it revolves around her son, Max, who is the reason for her being. Many people look at Max and think that he's odd, but Adam bonds with him immediately. He may want nothing more than to step in and help her and Max, but Lily has made do for years. But how long can she resist the pull to the only boy she's ever loved even though she knows he's moved on?

There are several twists in this story--one that I pretty much figured out from the get-go, one that took me a longer time to get to, and one that I didn't see coming at all. It's those twists that make this more than just a second chance romance. You have the love story alongside family drama and I confess that I was taken aback when the machinations were revealed because had that been done to me, I would have reacted far less placidly than the characters did here. Seriously, how manipulative and selfish one character was had me aghast and really disgusted.

But with the bad comes the good and I really liked the story that Lily and Adam shared and how it wasn't the norm. I've read countless second chance romances but this one had a fresh take on the trope and not taking the cliché route. While Lily and Adam's story did have the expected happily-ever-after, the family drama isn't fully resolved, and I think that this could be a good thing since the series has just begun. With the tidbits about Adam's four brothers--Corey, Owen, Drew, and James--I can't wait to read more of Copper Creek. Four stars for Coming Home. ♥
