Review: A Fallen Star by A.M. Kusi (Shattered Cove #1)

A Fallen Star is the first book in the Shattered Cove series and my first read from the husband-and-wife writing team of A.M. Kusi. This series starter is a falling-for-your-best-friend's-sibling, or alternatively falling-for-your-sibling's-best-friend, romance with a fair bit of angst to it. Remy Stone has had feelings for her brother's best friend for quite some time, but as much Mikel Evans shares those feelings, he doesn't believe he's worthy of someone like Remy. The fact that she also happens to be his best friend's sister has him unwilling to cross that proverbial line. But keeping his feelings in check is becoming more and more difficult, especially because Remy is the very light that he needs in the all-consuming darkness that's been shadowing Mikel.
This was a pretty good beginning to what looks to be a promising series. The book got of to a rather slow start, one that lasted quite a few chapters. The pacing did speed up, although there were times when whatever was going on was prolonged unnecessarily. The best thing about this novel, however, was the cast of characters, particularly Remy and Mikel. These two truly were the product of their upbringing and what they were exposed to. There was a naivete to Remy, but I loved seeing her growth throughout the story, and how inner strength of character shone through the darkness enveloping Mikel. Speaking of the tortured hero, it was impossible for my heart not to break for all he'd gone through. He was a survivor of his circumstances, and Remy's true love for him was Mikel's saving grace. Four stars go to A Fallen Star.
