Review: Dare to Tempt by Carly Phillips (Dare Nation #2)

Carly Phillips's second Dare Nation book has romance alongside elements of mystery and suspense, and it makes for entertaining reading indeed. Dare to Tempt is the story of Damon Prescott, superstar athlete and captain of the Miami Thunder, and Evie Wolfe, private investigator and independent woman after my own heart. When Damon is accused of taking performance enhancing drugs after a positive test result, his agent--who also happens to be his older brother, Austin, whose story kicked off the series--and his publicist--who is none other than his younger sister, Bri--bring in a private investigator--who happens to be his brother's girlfriend's best friend--Evie. In order for Evie to do some up close and personal digging, she needs to pretend to be Damon's girlfriend. Convincing others is proving to be not as difficult as Damon once thought, but convincing Evie that the connection they share is worth exploring for real may not be all that simple, especially with Evie's ex stalking and threatening her.
Readers are given a hint of what awaits Damon and Evie at the end of series starter Dare to Resist, and Carly Phillips's story for these two lived up to the promise she left us with back in May. The romance was both sexy and sweet (which is what Phillips is known for, and hello, this author does it well) while the mystery was easy enough to solve (who was trying to hurt Damon's football career) when you consider who had motive. The suspense part had to do with Evie's ex-boyfriend, and that was certainly interesting, especially when it triggers the protective nature of not only Damon but Evie's four brothers (I have my fingers and toes crossed that these guys will be getting their own series sooner rather than later). I liked seeing the steady progress of Damon and Evie's relationship, and I appreciated getting more of a peek at Damon's usually missing brother, Braden, and Jaxon, the brother whose story is up next in the series. Dare Nation is proving to be as good as its predecessors in the author's Dare book universe, and I look forward to the rest of the series. 4.5 stars for Dare to Tempt.
