Felice Stevens closes out her Second Chances trilogy with Beautiful Mistakes, which is the story of Garrett Wolf and Spencer Hawkins. While their two other best friends, Elliot Hansen and Chester Braxton, have found love and happiness with their respective partners, Wolf and Spencer are too busy with their careers to bother with love--or at least that's what they're trying to convince themselves and everyone else is their reality. These two may be friends but their friendship is on very precarious footing. That's what happens when lust gets the better of you and you act on it, only to pretend that things can go back to the way they were prior to that line being crossed. These two are in denial and betrayal has created fissures in the very foundation of their relationship. Mistakes have been made, but falling in love with your closest friend could be the most beautiful of all.
Throughout the first two books, it was clear that while this group of four best friends may have been very close, the friendship between Wolf and Spencer was fractured to a degree. Readers of the series finally get their answers as to what's been going on and what's led to these two having increasing moments of tension and frustration. There was a whole lot of angst, but Felice Stevens continues to balance that quite nicely with the romance aspect. There are also some fairly lighthearted points throughout the book, so don't think of this as an overly heavy drama-fest. I liked seeing Wolf and Spencer develop into main characters with depth. Their stories--both the one they share and the back stories that they come with--are complicated, and getting to that well-deserved happily-ever-after was not easy, but the journey was a good one. 4.5 stars for Beautiful Mistakes.
