Review: The What If Guy by Lauren Blakely (The Guys Who Got Away #2)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

"To moments," he says. "To moments that might lead to more moments."
The tingles inside me multiply once more. "And to not missing them."

Refreshing. That's exactly what this second book in Lauren Blakely's The Guys Who Got Away series was. It was everything I didn't know I needed. For someone as voracious a reader as I am, especially when it comes to the romance genre, finding a book that is so wonderfully unexpected in the best ways possible is an honest-to-goodness rarity. I have expectations when it comes to Blakely, and those expectations are admittedly high because I know how gifted of a storyteller this author is. The What If Guy is, in my opinion, one of her best, and it's one of my top reads for 2020.

They first meet while trying to nab a vintage Snoopy lunch box, and the connection is undeniably strong with these two thirty-two-year-old strangers. They part ways without getting names or exchanging numbers, but in the age of mobile apps (and maybe a bit of luck and a push from Fate), Looking for Mr. Lunch Box and Seeking Fan of Snoopy quickly reconnect. One shared moment wasn't enough for either Logan or Bryn, but when they realize that he's Logan Clarke (aka her new boss) and she's Bryn Hawthorne (aka his employee), all these two may be left with are what-ifs.

Logan and Bryn's romance was a breath of fresh air, what with two characters who had no pretenses and were upfront about who they were and what they wanted and needed, and not just from each other! Time wasn't wasted on meanderings and miscommunication or unnecessary drama. This was about two people who shared a once-in-a-lifetime connection and while there was some fair amount of contemplation because of everything that was at stake, when they decided they were all in, they were ALL IN. The added elements of Logan being a single parent and Bryn being an independent and ambitious woman get major snaps because they were done well and without compromise. Everything just blended so amazingly together and I couldn't have chosen a better book to spend a couple or so hours kicking back and relaxing with. No ifs, ands, or buts--The What If Guy is a five-plus-starred read. ♥
