Review: I Bet You by Ilsa Madden-Mills (The Hook-Up #2)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Social Butterfly PR.

There's no resisting Ilsa Madden-Mills's The Hook-Up series, not when she's got two novels already done and it shows no signs of waning plus it makes me eager for even more from the cast of characters she's assembled. After falling in love with series starter I Dare You, I had high expectations for the next book, and I Bet You more than met those expectations. A sweet and sassy nerd who just happens to be a virgin and the school's star quarterback whose reputation she's already thrown under a bad light once before? Yes, please, and if you're thinking this is a revenge romance sort of thing, you're very much mistaken. This book was more, but simply put: it was a fun read.

Penelope Graham likes the sport of football and her knowledge of the game is not just for show either. Whether it be how the sport is played or team stats or which team is better, Penelope is no slouch, which is just one of the reasons why Ryker Voss is so drawn to her. She isn't all too sure why he's suddenly as friendly as he is. Maybe he wants to get back at her for that unflattering article she wrote about him. Maybe being her friend is his good deed for the year. But as weird as their friendship may seem, Penelope can't deny that she likes the charming and sincere guy behind the football star. But they're JUST friends because Ryker could never want someone like Penelope for more than that. She'd bet everything she had on it. But with Ryker Voss, she should prepare to lose.

I loved Penelope and Ryker! These two had that awkward sort of start to their relationship, but watching it become a fond and firm friendship and then a romantic one was both sweet and swoon-worthy. They were fun to get to know and their connection felt real and natural. Of course, there's a wee bit of drama thrown into the mix, courtesy of Penelope's issues with her father and step-sister and Ryker's rivalry with another member of the team. There's also the matter of a bet that's been made. I won't say what the bet is and who made it, but suffice it to say, that it's a bet that could very well break what Ryker and Penelope have developing between them. Don't worry--this ends in a very happy ending that left a satisfied smile on my face. I'm not sure if this is the end of the series or not (there are a few more characters I hope will get their stories told!), but either way, I Bet You receives 4.5 stars. ♥
