Review: Sunkissed Days by Samantha Chase (Magnolia Sound #0.5)

Samantha Chase is one of those authors who makes it easy to say “yes” to anything and everything that’s got her name attached to it. While I’ve yet to read her co-authored stuff, I’ve read all her solo efforts, falling in love with her standalones and series that highlight the importance of family and how finding true love is worth the time and effort. She’s launching a new series entitled Magnolia Sound and kicks things off with Sunkissed Days, a prequel novella that introduces readers to the fictional location and community of Magnolia Sound as well as the first couple in the series. It does end with a cliffhanger of sorts, but the first full-length novel comes out in March.

When twenty-year-old Mallory Westbrook finds out that her longtime crush will be joining the weekend-long celebration of her great-grandfather’s ninetieth birthday, she decides it’s time to let him know exactly how she feels. Seeing Mal all grown up throws Jacob Summerford for a loop, but as attracted to her as he may be, the four-year age difference is just one of the reasons he should keep his distance. Frustrated and hurt by Jake’s rejection, Mal decides to show him what he’s missing, and when Jake finally decides to cross the line, they embark on a summer romance that feels like more. But with summer’s end looming, will they need to go their separate ways?

I really liked this introduction into Samantha Chase’s new series! Jake and Mallory are the first couple, and while they don’t get their happy ending here, readers are given the back story of their romance, which then makes it easier to become invested in what happens to them a few years after the events that play out in this prequel novella. Mal is a tad immature here—quick to make snap judgments and decisions that could cost her—so now I’m curious to see as to how everything will be resolved in the full-length novel, Remind Me, which will be released in the first half of March. With a start as promising as Sunkissed Days, I’m excited for more from Magnolia Sound. 4.5 stars. ♥
