Review: Best Laid Plans by Lauren Blakely (Lucky in Love #1)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

Best friends will do almost anything for each other, right? The very best of friends would have no qualms asking for and offering their help in pushing their boundaries sex-wise, yes? Okay, maybe that would take an extraordinary sort of friendship, which is exactly what Arden East and Gabe Harrison share. So when Arden asks Gabe if he would help teach her a thing or two about being more adventurous in the bedroom, there's no awkwardness whatsoever. The fact that Gabe happens to have a thing for his best friend and thinks this could be his chance to show her just how perfect they'd be as more than friends has him agreeing to Arden's scheme. Ground rules are set and a deadline's in place and their friendship should remain intact, but you know what's been said about best laid plans.

Lauren Blakely's romantic comedies never fail to win me over with the banter and push and pull and a couple of main characters that are irresistibly charming. Best Laid Plans is her latest standalone romance, and it was a fictional romantic treat to devour in the couple or so hours it took for me to finish it in one sitting. I loved how Arden and Gabe's friendship began and how it's stayed platonic for the year that they've been best friends. I know that some people may think that it would be weird to ask your best friend to help you out with something in the sexual sense, but it's really not as uncommon as you would think. There's a level of comfort that these two share, and I think it's been fostered over time thanks in large part to their mutual love, trust, and respect for each other.

Whenever I pick up one of this author's books, I'm guaranteed to not be bored. Blakely is an author who knows how to entertain her readers, but she also knows how to capture their hearts with stories that have wit and humor and a hint of angst to them--not counting one of my favorites from last year, Unbreak My Heart, since that had the most angst I've ever seen in any of Blakely's books I've read. Arden and Gabe had a great friends-to-lovers story, and it was an easy read that gave me exactly what I needed. There was, as always, a good cast of supporting characters to provide even more humor and direction to this fabulous story, and I've heard good things about the audiobook, so I may dive into that sooner rather than later. Overall, Best Laid Plans ticked all my boxes. Five stars. ♥
