Review: Then There Was You by Claire Contreras (Second Chances #1)

Gah! That ending! And now I have to wait three weeks?! Whyyyyy? Sigh. But I know I'm going to wait because I need answers, damn it! I need to know what happens next with these two!!! Oh wait. You have no idea what I'm ranting and raving about over here, do you? Well, you see, Claire Contreras, wonderful go-to author of mine that she is, has unleashed onto the readers and fans her latest release, Then There Was You, and it's the first in her Second Chances duet. Now, going on, I knew I was going to end up with an evil cliffhanger because most duets work that way. So, I had a feeling Contreras had a cliffhanger up her sleeve, but talk about major heartrending moment that led up to it and then BAM! That revelation?! Take my heart already, why don't you?!?
Allow me to give you a quick rundown on the need-to-know regarding this duet starter. Rowan Hawthorne once had a firm hold on Tessa Monte's heart when they had crossed the line as teenagers. He considered her his best friend, but he was far more than that for her. When they went their separate ways, a gap formed between the two of them. Years later, Tessa's returned to their hometown, and at twenty-four, her dream of earning an apprenticeship is coming true, with her pick between Paris and New York the only thing standing in her way. But that was before she crossed paths once again with Rowan. Falling for each other would be a mistake, there's no stopping them. That is, not until ambition and obligation get in their way, and hearts will be broken.
If you read the blurb for the book, the story is basically laid out for you, so you pretty much know that you are NOT going to be getting any sort of happy-for-now ending here, and if you were hoping for a happily-ever-after, than that would have been wishful thinking on your part. That's not how duets work. And I knew--I KNEW--that I was in for heartache and that I would have to wait for the release of My Way Back to You, and still I read this because, damn it, it's Claire Contreras and she's never steered me wrong! The painful squeeze in my chest? Totally worth it? The waiting game? I'm all in because Tessa and Rowan? Well, their story isn't over, and I desperately need to know what happens to them after all that heartbreak. Five stars go to Then There Was You. ♥
