Review: Delayed Penalty by Sophia Henry (Pilots Hockey #1)

Auden Berezin has lost her soccer scholarship and needs to have the money to pay for her college education. During her winter break, she's employed as a translator for an up and coming Russian hockey player with the minor league Detroit Pilots. Her initial impression of Aleksandr Varenkov isn't stellar and he can be rather exasperating but there's no denying that she's attracted to him. Pretty soon, she realizes that he's not quite the puck bunny collector she assumed he was and her feelings grow. But the last thing she needs is someone who is guaranteed to do the very same thing others before him have done: leave her.
Delayed Penalty is the first book in the Pilots Hockey new adult (NA) series from Sophia Henry and I've been trying to gather my thoughts to write this review because as much as I didn't hate the book, I can't really say that I loved it either. I couldn't really connect with either Auden Berezin or Aleksandr Varenkov and didn't get the feeling that there was much chemistry between them. I wouldn't say that neither of them were likable but the shifts in their personalities or moods were often abrupt, as were the scene transitions, making them feel choppy and confusing and found myself going "Huh?" more then once the entire time.
I so wanted this book to be better than what it turned out to be because I disliked giving anything less than 3.5 stars when I rate. Heck, even 3.5 stars already means it wasn't a totally enjoyable reading endeavor on my end. There was just too much going on with Auden and some of them felt as if they were thrown in without too much purpose and others were left unresolved. Then you had all these other guys who had the whole unrequited love/lust/like thing going for Auden and it would have been okay had it just been one. This was a case of the whole not being greater than the sum of its parts. Delayed Penalty gets two stars. ♥
