Review: Serving Trouble by Sara Jane Stone (Second Shot #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Avon Impulse in exchange for an honest review.

Serving Trouble is the first full-length novel in the Second Shot series from author Sara Jane Stone. The story takes place five years after the events in the prequel novella, Running Wild, which is available as a free download on e-retailers, and also happens to be included with this new release. I do recommend, however, that you read the prequel before you read this series starter, simply because it provides the history of the main characters' love story and how different they were five years prior to their impromptu reunion here. Plus, not only can you download it for free, but it's also a really short read, so it's a win-win.

Josephine Fairmore has loved Noah Tager, her brother's best friend, for years, but they were forced to go their separate ways when Noah joined the Marines. Josie was supposed to prove to everyone in their small hometown that she could be mature and responsible, but an unexpected pregnancy that later led to a premature birth and the subsequent death of her baby have derailed her plans. Now she finds herself back in Forever, Oregon needing a job that will get her on the road to paying her accumulated hospital bills. She only has one person in mind to help her out, but will Noah remember his promise to come to her rescue?

This story had a second chance romance feel to it mixed in with the falling-for-your-sibling's-best-friend trope. The Noah we find her is moderately different from the Noah we were introduced to in the prequel, and a lot of that change had to do with his disillusionment while serving as a Marine. He no longer sees himself as capable of being anyone's hero, least of all the kind of hero that Josie needs. However, Josie still glimpses parts of the old Noah and it was clear that there was something about him that made him a natural when it came to offer help to someone who needed it, giving him that undeniable hero reputation.

There was a lot--and I mean A LOT--of back and forth when it came to Noah and Josie finally making good on what they started five years ago. I understood their hesitancy, though I will admit to it leading to a bit of frustration on my end because I just wanted them to get on with it already. There's some suspense thrown into the mix, with an unknown enemy wanting to get revenge. I'm curious to see if Caroline and Josh will get, at the very least, a novella, and who between Dominic or Ryan will get their story told next. So far, Second Shot has been an entertaining romance series to read. Serving Trouble receives 4.5 stars. ♥
