Review: My Lucky #13 by Piper Rayne (Hockey Hotties #1)

One of my favorite writing duos has a new series, and it's a sports romance to boot! Piper Rayne kicked things off with a free prequel novella, Countdown to a Kiss, which I highly recommend readers check out prior to diving into this new full-length novel, My Lucky #13, because it lays down the groundwork for the series as a whole and the series starter in particular. All that being said, everything gets off to a strong start, and I'm definitely quite excited to seeing where Piper and Rayne take the series with books two and three.
My Lucky #13 features non-superstitious professional hockey player whose game is in a slump, that is until he has a life-changing encounter on New Year's Eve with a woman he has no business wanting. Aiden Drake may be the center for and team captain of the Florida Fury, but he knows all too well that a downward slump for any player is dangerous territory. When he finally does well during his first game post-New Year's Eve, he's encouraged by his agent and teammates to do whatever it is he did, he makes his way to Saige Fowler, social media specialist. He isn't looking for help with his online presence. What Aiden needs from Saige is for her to do exactly what she did on New Year's. What he wants, however, is for her to be his girl...except Saige is dating his agent.
As far as full-length series starters go, Piper and Rayne have a winner with My Lucky #13. After "meeting" Saige and Aiden in the prequel novella, Countdown to a Kiss, I enjoyed getting to know them better in this novel. I liked the idea of a pro hockey player not being superstitious until his lackluster performance on the ice could be the catalyst for a trade. There was a lot of great humor to go with the more romantic aspect of the story, something that this writing duo have been consistently great at. There are also notable supporting characters, some that I'm eager to read more about as the series moves forward. My fingers are crossed that they'll all be as good as this series starter. Four stars.
