Review: "Getting It Right" by A.M. Arthur (Restoration #1)
Note: This ARC was provided by Carina Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Nathan Wolf and James Taggert: some people see them simply as the straight guy and the gay guy who happen to best friends, which they have been since college, but what no one else knows is that both Nate and Jay have been hiding something as far back as then. The thing is, neither of them knows that the secret they're keeping from even each other are very mutual feelings that have been buried deep for far too long.
Detective Nathan Wolf loves being a cop and he knows he's good at his job but is humble enough to heed the advice of those who have been around longer than he has. He's got a loving a family and a best friend that is closer to him than anyone else around. What he doesn't have is a steady relationship, even though he's had girlfriends before. When history repeats itself, Nate wonders if it's finally time to come clean.
Dr. James Taggert is passionate about helping troubled youth deal with their inner struggles. The loss of his sister is what inspired him to be a psychiatrist, but even as he shares his expertise, he won't acknowledge that he's dealing with his own emotions in a self-destructive manner. When he blacks out in his best friend's house after a drunken episode, James wonders if he's missed something momentous.
Nate and James have already kissed once before, but that was on a dare. The kiss they shared and which James subsequently forgot was different. Nate kissed James back, and with that kiss, feelings that confused Nate in college and thought he had forgotten come back to life. But when Nate tells James what happened, James pretends to not feel anything for Nate other than friendship and goes on to reject him.
James' rejection hurts Nate and he walks away, leaving James feeling even worse for having lied to him. After all, James has been in love with Nate ever since they were in college. Will it take a horrifying incident to make these men acknowledge that what's going on between them has been simmering for years and that it may be time for them to finally take risks and make certain changes in order to get what they both want?
Anyone who's regularly read my review here on my book blog or on Goodreads will know that I've been a fan of author A.M. Arthur's ever since I fell in love with her Cost of Repairs series. I'll jump at the chance to read and review anything she writes. ^.^ Getting It Right is the first in the new Restoration trilogy, a spin-off of the Belonging series, which I also loved and where James was introduced to readers as Tag.
Aside from the love story itself, the book also delves into alcohol addiction and sexual abuse, plus there's some mystery suspense going on by way of a case that Nate has been investigating. On the mystery front, I was able to figure out who was committing the crimes but the revelation and following resolution were still able to provide the necessary thrill and excitement that make for an even better reading experience.
I love friends to lovers stories and this one, while often heartbreaking, was oh-so-satisfying. Even after they confessed their feelings for one another, life didn't suddenly become easier or automatically happier. They had issues that they had to overcome and that's what made their journey as a couple more inspiring to read. A.M. Arthur got it right with Getting It Right and has produced a fantastic 4.5-starred winner. ♥
