Review: "The Truth as He Knows It" by A.M. Arthur (Perspectives #1)
Noel Carlson is a police officer in the small town of Stratton, Pennsylvania, a place he's called home for only a few months. He enjoys the professional side of his life but the personal side has been rather quiet. He's not out and he misses being with someone, though he does spend his days off visiting his best friend at a care facility. So, when Noel and his partner are called to a noise complaint at an apartment, he doesn't expect his thoughts to soon be consumed by the nearly naked male stripper tied to the bed by his client.
Shane Joseph is a stripper and a barista, needing as much income as he can get in order to help pay medical debts incurred. He wants to be able to help his brother out as much as he can, knowing that the reason his brother works himself to the bone is because of choices Shane made. He's thankful when he isn't arrested by Noel and the mutual attraction is something they're willing to explore. Unfortunately, just as things heat up, Shane makes a decision that could end up costing him both his brother and Noel.
The Truth as He Knows It is the first book in the Perspectives series by author A.M. Arthur, which is a spin-off of the popular, and one of my personal favorites, Cost of Repairs series. There were a lot of things going on in the story, what with Noel and Shane dealing with their own personal issues on top of trying to start a relationship of sorts. Noel's love for his best friend and Shane's love for his brother went above and beyond, with both main characters willing to do almost anything for those they care most for.
When Shane makes the choice to return to doing something he was never comfortable or happy doing just to help alleviate the debt their family owed plus the new bills coming in, it was one that he obviously made out of desperation. Of course, everyone has choices and he made the one that he felt would fix the problem as quickly as possible but he did have other options had he just taken the time to think it through. I don't know if I would have reacted the same way that Noel did when Shane's secret was revealed.
I loved Noel's relationship with Tristan, his best friend, and I'm interested to see how his story will be told, especially after all the trauma he endured and the aftermath he's still trying to deal with. I'm going to assume that he's partnered with Gabe since that's who showed him interest in this book. I'm definitely looking forward to how they deal with all their issues. As for The Truth as He Knows It, the story is intense and the characters likable and it was a good start to the series. I'm giving it four out of five stars. ♥
