Review: "Tempest" by Lisa Henry & J.A. Rock (Playing the Fool #3)

Note: This ARC was provided by Riptide Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Someone's trying to frame Special Agent Ryan "Mac" McGuinness and after being informed that things are far worse than they initially thought, he goes on the run with con man Henry Page and Viola Hanes, Henry's twin sister. Their destination in none other than Altona, specifically Mac's parents' property which houses the family farm and an abandoned cabin. Mac's decision to go to Altona baffles Henry since going to the first place the FBI's OPR would head to simply seemed wrong, but Mac's going with his instincts.

Mac and Henry feel like they're playing a game of hide and seek--they're hiding from whomever is orchestrating the plot to frame Mac and the people helping them and they're seeking answers from wherever they can find them. While trying to see who it is they can and can't trust and trying to protect their families, Mac and Henry also need to figure out what exactly is going on between the two of them and if what they have is something they want to hold on to or if it's something that they'll need to let go of.

With its trademark wit, this third installment in the Playing the Fool series picks up where its predecessor left off, but Tempest surpassed my expectations and amped everything up. I enjoyed trying to figure out who was after Mac and Henry and who all the players were, so the mystery aspect of the story was at an all-time high. In terms of drama, Mac's relationship with his family and Henry's with Viola gave interesting perspectives to the men themselves and Henry and Viola being welcomed into Mac's family was sweet.

As for the love story of Mac and Henry, I was happy to see that these two men finally had the discussion regarding their relationship and where it was headed. But, as is the case with most men, there weren't a whole lot of words that were needed between the two, almost as if they had a much better understanding of what the other was thinking and feeling. I love the sarcastic humor and overall snarkiness these two tend to bring out in one another, but then there's also the genuine love and affection that they share.

My fingers are crossed that we haven't seen the last of Mac and Henry and that note at the end of the book is making me even more hopeful. I've been rather spoiled, what with each of the releases spaced within a few weeks of one another but some things are definitely waiting for and a fourth book (or more!) in this series will be well worth it. ^.^ I started Tempest with a great deal of anticipation and I finished it with a satisfied smile on my face. A sure sign that I am one happy bookaholic. I'm giving it five stars out of five! ♥
