Review: "One Night with Her Bachelor" by Kat Latham (Bachelor Auction #6)

Molly Dekker has always tried to be the best mom she can possibly be to her ten-year-old son Josh. The one time she tries to do something for herself, i.e. trying to seduce Gabriel Morales, a former Air Force veteran and her late brother's best friend, the day ends up with him rescuing Josh after he suffers a life-altering accident. Months later, Molly's grasping at straws, trying to keep her head above water as she wades through all the bills that have been piling, all while making sure Josh has everything he needs as an incomplete quadriplegic. Gabriel has quietly helped but still keeps to himself in his cabin in the woods.
Just when Molly thinks all hope is lost, financial help comes in the form of a charity auction put together by her best friend Lily Taylor in which six of the most eligible and hottest bachelors in Marietta, Montana. When Gabriel turns out to be one of the bachelors set for auction, Josh surprises his mom by bidding on and winning him for her. Josh wants Molly to go out and enjoy herself and to not constantly hover him, explaining that he also needs some space away from her mothering. Gabriel may have only seen Molly as his best friend's kid sister when they were growing up but now he sees her as much more than that.
Even as Molly and Gabriel genuinely enjoy each other's company, there's something that he hasn't told her, a secret that he believes will change the way she sees him. In her eyes, she's a hero but he doesn't see himself as that. He's always served a purpose and now, after his injury and being discharged from the Air Force, he feels lost, unsure of what it is he should do with himself. Will Gabriel have the courage to not only tell Molly the truth but to also live the rest of his life not as a recluse but as someone ready to explore all of the possibilities ahead of him or will his realizations come too late and end up breaking two hearts?
Bringing the multi-authored Bachelor Auction series full circle is the Kat Latham-penned sixth and final book, One Night with Her Bachelor. While each of the books may be read as standalones, I do suggest that they be read in order so that you can get a better feel for the overall story line and see what happens to each of the six bachelors and the women who "win" them. This sixth book is about Molly, whose son's condition inspired the creation of the bachelor auction. We also get the back story that involves Molly and one of the bachelors up for auction, Gabriel, who have known each other for a quarter of a decade.
One of my favorite things about this novel is the emphasis on Molly being reminded that she there's nothing wrong with taking care of herself and her own needs and wants apart from being Josh's mom. The lesson that people who want to offer their help does not necessarily equate to pity is an important one, as is learning how to ask for and accept that help. With sensitive and personable characters and a touching and memorable story, I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend One Night with Her Bachelor, which gets five stars. As for the entire Bachelor Auction series, I'm giving it an overall and well-earned 4.75 stars. ♥
