Review: "Need" by K.I. Lynn & N. Isabelle Blanco (Need #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by The Hype PR via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Brayden Hunt first meets Kira Roth when he's ten and she's seven. Kira, her brother Ryan, and their mom have moved to the neighborhood and with Brayden and Ryan being the same age, they gravitate towards each other and become best friend. But when Brayden lays his eyes on little Kira, there's something about her that commands his attention and, within a few minutes of that first meeting, they've become best friends as well. From that point on, they become permanent fixtures in each other's lives.

As the years pass, Brayden and Kira, along with Ryan, become the closest of friends, being there for one another in both good and bad times. Brayden's always been able to get any girl that he wants but his heart belongs to only Kira, even though he knows Ryan would probably hurt him badly should he ever find out the intensity of Brayden's feelings. On the other hand, Kira's the innocent girl who has always wanted Brayden, the depth of her own feelings matching Brayden's but neither admitting the truth.

Just when Brayden and Kira appear ready to be open and honest about what's been bubbling underneath the surface for years, Brayden's father and Kira's mother make and announcement that turns everyone's world upside down. With a new and more formidable obstacle in their way, Brayden decides to do the one thing that seems right--he distances himself from Kira, breaking both their hearts in the process. Will these two star-crossed lovers ever be able to share in the love they have for one another?

Need is the first novel in the series with the same title and is a collaborative effort by bestselling authors K.I. Lynn, whose previous work I've loved and raved about, and N. Isabelle Blanco, whose work is on my to-be-read list. The story itself is quite intense and while the feelings between the two main characters were mutual, the extenuating circumstances that surrounded them made it difficult. Brayden, being the adult, made choices he believed was best, even though he would often doubt his own actions.

Brayden and Kira were great characters and you could see that with Kira, who was still a teenager, wanting to go with what she felt and acting on it, Brayden desperately had to stand firm on not giving in. These two had dirty mouths, which often got them into trouble because it almost felt like they were taunting each other into simply just surrendering to their urges. I loved how Ryan, Kira's brother and Brayden's best friend, was the voice of reason, even after Brayden confessed he was in love with the guy's sister.

The book does end in a cliffhanger of sorts so, naturally, I was a tad frustrated but the second book, which appears to be the conclusion of Brayden and Kira's story based on the ever-so-short text on Goodreads, is due out this year. I'm slowly learning to be more patient when it comes to stuff like this...but cliffhangers are still evil. So there. ^.^ Need is a book that you need to read and one that puts a lot of the other books hopping on the step-siblings bandwagon to shame. I'm giving this steamy read five stars! ♥
