Review: "Savage Chains" by Caris Roane (Men in Chains #1.5)

Note: This ARC was provided by St. Martin's Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Brogan Reyes is on a one-vampire mission to put a permanent stop to the sex slavery ring known as the Starlin Group. He's been working for years to build his reputation and his financial status as a slaver worthy enough to be invited to the group. Nothing sickens him more than to see how the slaves are abducted, tortured, raped, and then sold to the highest bidder only to suffer even worse treatment. For a vampire like him to have endured and survived is one thing; it's the human slaves that have expiry dates because they simply aren't equipped to sustain such brutality in every single way imaginable.

When he finally gains access to the group and attends his first auction, everything appears to be going to plan...until he comes across one of the humans up for bidding: a young woman named Angelica. He knows who she is, having noticed her countless times before in the human world. Her feisty nature merely encourages the sadistic bidders to up the ante and Reyes shocks everyone, himself included, when he buys her for five million dollars. Now, Reyes is forced to alter his plans, knowing that if his cover is blown, he may end up losing his one chance to take Starlin down, but it may cost him the woman he loves.

Be aware that this title is a compilation of three novellas: Savage Chains: Captured, Savage Chains: Scarred, and Savage Chains: Shattered. I've never read the three separate novellas so I can't really compare but Savage Chains read very well as a standalone and provides fans of the Men in Chains series a better understanding of the sex slavery trade in the vampire world, an ongoing story arc throughout the three novels. If you've never read any of the three books in the series (though I highly recommend that you do), you can go into Savage Chains without having to worry that you're missing anything.

This compilation falls between the first and second books but none of the Briggs brothers are part of this story. I liked the chemistry between Brogan Reyes and Angelica (whose last name was never mentioned in the story) and I enjoyed having a strong heroine matched up with a hero like Reyes. I do need to point out that there may be triggers in this book, since rape, torture, and abuse are a running theme, so please be aware before you decide to read it. Now, if you're a trigger-free reader, I recommend you check Savage Chains by Caris Roane out and be prepared for a dark, original, and fantastic read. 4.5 stars! ♥
