Review: "Force of Attraction" by D.D. Ayres (K-9 Rescue #2)

Note: This ARC was provided by St. Martin's Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

DEA Agent Scott Lucca knows the sacrifices one has to make when they go undercover for a case. He lost the one person he loved most--his wife Nikki--when she caught him in a very public compromising position while undercover. They've been divorced for a couple of years yet no one's ever replaced her in his heart or mind. The only thing that keeps him busy is his work with his canine partner Izzy. When he's made the leader of a task force to gather evidence and take down an illegal drug ring using puppies to smuggle their wares, he recommends the best person possible for the job--his ex-wife.

K-9 police officer Nicole "Cole" Jamieson and her furry, four-legged partner Hugo are a formidable team, so when she's asked to join a task force to put a stop to the illegal distribution of drugs with puppies as drug mules, she's excited...until she finds out who the task leader is. She's never gotten over her ex-husband, even though he hurt her terribly when an undercover job forced him to do something unthinkable. She's hesitant to spend time with him, all the more because they'll have to work undercover as a committed couple trying to join the world of agility dogs to get close to a suspect.

Scott and Cole become Sam and Noel, two people who are supposed to be very much in love and have a shared affection for dogs. The latter is easy to pull off, the former...well, if they're honest with each other, the feelings are still there. Now that they're deep undercover, they don't know what's real and what's for show. They've never talked about the night Scott got caught and Cole knows that he's never been open about his other issues. Add to that an ex-con biker who's getting to Scott through those closest to him and Scott and Cole may very well have bitten off more than they and their dogs can chew.

Force of Attraction is the second novel and third release in the D.D. Ayres-penned K-9 Rescue series. This is a standalone and has no connection with the two previous releases. Here we've got two lead characters who used to be married to but are still in love with one another and are brought together by a case that touches upon their love for dogs. Between the two K-9 dogs, Hugo definitely got more time in the spotlight compared to Izzy but I loved that Hugo was a Bouvier des Flandres and Izzy was a chocolate Labrador instead of the usual breeds (i.e. German Shepherd) and colors (yellow Lab).

There was a lot of tension between Scott and Cole and I was glad that there wasn't this instantaneous hopping back to bed between the two simply because they were working together. There was obviously a trust issue on Cole's part and Scott still hadn't initiated any sharing of information about what happened before nor was he open about his family issues then and now. The story was fast-paced and filled with what you want from a suspense thriller, and, of course, the romance was well worth the time you put into reading the book. I recommend Force of Attraction and give it a perfect five-star rating. ♥
