Review: "Crash & Burn" by Abigail Roux (Cut & Run #9)

"I promise to love you until I die." ~ Zane

"I promise to never leave you alone in the dark." ~ Ty

It's been five years since Beaumont Tyler Grady and Zane Zachary Garrett were first partnered together by their boss in the FBI, Richard Burns. Now, Ty's retired and Zane's been promoted as the Special Agent-in-Charge. Unfortunately, Ty isn't really taking to retirement very well and Zane can't fully enjoy the perks of being the head honcho since they're still after the mole they suspect is lurking around. They're constantly on the look out for bugs and other monitoring devices around the office and the row house. But when Ty's best friend and fellow Sidewinder Nick O'Flaherty shows up bloodied on their front stoop, things begin to spin quickly out of control.

Ty and Zane are being hunted down by more than one group and it's difficult to tell who truly are the good guys and who aren't. With their ragtag team composed of the very few people they trust and the ones they begrudgingly bring into the fold, Ty and Zane need to figure out how to discover separate the newly discovered truth to the long-held untruths they're only beginning to realize were being to fed to them all along. With the body count rising and a puzzle left behind by Richard Burns that they need to solve, Ty and Zane will have to rely on each other and those closest to them if they want to be able to make it out of this alive and together.

Ah, where do I begin? Anyone who visited my book blog in September last year will know that I reviewed the then available books in the Cut & Run series, including the ficlets, plus the Sidewinder books. I discovered the books and devoured each one in August and I simply fell in love with Ty and Zane from the beginning. I've become such a fangirl that I've been looking for charms that will symbolize each of the books and then put them on a bracelet. While I do have all the ebooks, I still prefer having the actual books in my hands but will have to wait a few more years before Riptide Publishing will be able to release a special signed edition.

Crash & Burn is the ninth and final (can you hear my heart breaking?) book in the series that captured my heart. Author Abigail Roux brought back a lot of the supporting characters that fans will be more than familiar with and the combination of all these familiar names brought a sense of poignancy and the realization that this truly is the end for the series. I cried (a lot), I laughed (A LOT), and my heart was pounding with excitement as I read every single thing Ty and Zane had to go through in this book. It wouldn't have made sense for these two to simply ride off into the sunset, whether in Ty's Mustang or Zane's Valkyrie, quietly.

The silliness and sarcasm, humor and angst, action and suspense, and romance and sex that the books in the series are known are very much present in this last installment. Even when these two push each other's buttons, you can feel the love between the two of them, as opposed to the whole love-hate vibe going on in the earlier books. I'm saddened that there will be no more books starring Ty & Zane (though I'm hoping they'll show up in the Sidewinder series every now and again) but I'm thankful I can re-read my ebooks whenever I want to, and yes, I will purchase the planned signed boxed set in 2018 or 2019, as mentioned on Ms. Roux's Tumblr.

I started reading this book with a sense of anticipation and anxiety but ended it with a silly grin on my face and my heart feeling full. Ty Grady and Zane Garrett will go down as one of the very best and most memorable fictional book duos ever in my book, regardless of genre or category. They will forever live in the hearts of fans and followers and I wish I could fully and properly express how much I love these two men and these books. Suffice it to say that this series is what made me fall in love with the M/M genre because I saw that it wasn't just about the sex. These nine books had heart from beginning to end.

Crash & Burn is a 2015 favorite and gets five-plus stars. My beloved and all-time favorite Cut & Run series gets an overall five-star rating. ♥♥♥
