Review: Dirty Steal by KD Casey & Lauren Blakely (Dirty Players #2)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the authors.

KD Casey and Lauren Blakely are two authors whose individual works I've enjoyed, the former being one of my favorite author discoveries from 2021 and the latter a consistent go-to author when it comes to romance reads in general. Now, the two have the second book in their Dirty Players series out in the wild. Dirty Steal can be read independently of the series starter, Dirty Slide, since they feature two different couples, with both receiving their happily-ever-afters. But if you love reading M/M sports romances--especially if you're a baseball fan--then I'd be remiss if I don't encourage you to peruse Dirty Slide, too.

Dirty Steal is the story of Derek Miller and Adam Chason. The former is a shortstop for the Seattle Pilots, and the latter plays the same position for the St. Louis Arches. When the two meet during a charity event over spring training, they click as friends soon after, but there's an underlying attraction there--heightened by the subtle flirtation and punctuated by one heck of an unforgettable make-out session. Then they went their separate ways. But now, Adam's been traded to Derek's team and it looks like he'll be staying in Derek's extra room as well. Adam may steal Derek's spot as shortstop, and he'll deal with whatever changes that may bring, but what happens if Adam manages to steal his heart?

I'm a sucker for a romance that has the main characters showing they've got an instant connection but something happens that forces them to actually have to work towards creating a relationship. Derek and Adam were so darn easy to fall in love with, and I adore that KD Casey and Lauren Blakely delivered on both the sports and romance aspects of their story. This was a novella in terms of length, but it packed so much, not skimping in terms of character development or making it feel like everything was being rushed. I seriously enjoyed everything Casey and Blakely had to give me by way of Derek and Adam, who both absolutely stole my cynical, wary yet die-hard romantic heart. Did that make sense? No? All that matters is you read Dirty Steal, which easily gets five stars!
