Review: The Hawks by SD Hendrickson

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Give Me Books Promotions.

Even with her three previous novels sitting quite comfortably somewhere in my Kobo app, my very first SD Hendrickson is her latest one: The Hawks. This romantic suspense read is about a woman named Sarina Atwood who lands the job opportunity of a lifetime working as the personal assistant of Delsey Hawthorn, matriarch of the highly esteemed Hawthorn clan. Being at Mrs. Hawthorn beck and call and constantly trying to please the elderly woman and be on her good side was easier said than done. Much was demanded of Sarina, but she was determined to prove herself worth to be within the hallowed halls of Hawk Mansion and in the presence of Mrs. Hawthorn. This is what she need to do in order to provide her family with a better life, so she abides by the rules placed upon her. And then she meets Javier Hawthorn, and staying away from the grandson of her employer is something that was demanded of her but Sarina's finding it hard to comply. Javier makes her feel like she belongs by his side, but when a home invasion turns violent, will Sarina wish she were anywhere but with the Hawthorns?

My expectations were pretty high, given the high praise that SD Hendrickson has received on her past work, which was also the basis of me buying her other books in the past. For the most part, I seriously liked The Hawks. It got off to an attention-grabbing start, and switching between what was happening in the present--i.e. the home invasion--and the past--flashbacks beginning with Sarina snagging the job as Delsey's Man Friday. Everything regarding the story was a win for me; it was like the gift that kept on giving, keeping me on my toes with what was happening with the intruders on one end and then Sarina's and Javier's romance on the other. There is, however, one thing that's stopping me from giving this book a rating higher than what I decided to give it: I couldn't fully connect with Sarina. I found almost everyone in the book interesting--and yes, that includes Delsey--except for her. I wasn't a fan of her awful treatment of Cole Ramsey nor did I really get the feeling she was as devoted in saving her family as much as she said she was. The story plus the rest of the cast of The Hawks, though, earned 4.5 stars. ♥
