Review: Heart Like Mine by Maggie McGinnis (Echo Lake #2)

Note: This ARC was provided by St. Martin's Press in exchange for an honest review.

Heart Like Mine is the second full-length novel and the third release in the contemporary romance series from bestselling author Maggie McGinnis entitled Echo Lake. Here we get Dr. Joshua Mackenzie's story, and if you've followed the series, he'll be a familiar name, having been an essential supporting character in the first book, Forever This Time. As head of the pediatrics department of Mercy Hospital, Josh spends most of his time checking on his patients and making sure his staff are performing well. When budget cuts become an inevitability more than a possibility, he comes face to face with financial analyst Delaney Blair. The last thing that Josh has time for is to go to battle with a woman who's hell-bent on slashing much needed funds from his department. Maybe showing Delaney exactly how their floor works will give her the insight necessary to see that even with the current budget, pediatrics still has needs that aren't being met. But in between all the business meetings and heated discussions, a different kind of heat and need stirs...

As usual, Maggie McGinnis was able to tug on my heartstrings with this beautifully written story about earning one another's trust, working as a team, and finding yourself while finding love. I've liked Josh from the beginning of the series and this book is further proof of what a good guy he really is. We get his story and see that he's had his own share of heartbreak, making him wary when it comes to further involvement with women. He and Delaney initially have somewhat of an adversarial relationship, and I liked that there wasn't this desire for her to make him like her because she had a crush on him. They worked on compromise and coming up with plans that will work out for both their departments. Aside from the romance, the parts in the story that had Josh and Delaney with the kids in the hospital were touching and one or two even brought a tear to my eye. The kids were the most important supporting characters here, truly becoming the heart of a heartwarming story. Heart Like Mine easily gets five stars. ♥
