Review: Swerve by Sherilee Gray (Boosted Hearts #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Enticing Journey Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

A bad boy and good girl falling for each other is one of my favorite romance tropes and the book that works that theme quite well is Swerve, the Boosted Hearts series starter from author Sherilee Gray. I'd have to say this is probably my top bad-boy-and-good-girl romances this year and it also happens to be my favorite Sherilee Gray, whose Axle Alley Vipers series was a fun read and one that I intend to finish via the third and final book this weekend. Swerve is sweet and sexy and leaves you fully satisfied by the time you get to the end. It's about twenty-five-year-old three-job part-timer Shay Freestone and thirty-one-year-old car thief and mechanic Hugh Colton. They're both doing whatever is necessary to keep their lives moving forward--albeit she chooses to do so by juggling several jobs and he's forced to boost vehicles in order to pay off his father's amassed debts. When they agree to a one-time thing, little did either of them expect it to lead to a proposal for a no-string-attached fling that begins to feel like something much more.

When she overheard her boss--the very same one she was in the middle of an affair with--making not-so-kind comments about her to people at work, Shay was left with no other alternative than to resign. Being in a committed relationship isn't on her to-do list, so when Hugh informs her that he isn't interested in a relationship, she has no qualms about it. Except that one time they shared together leaves both of them wanting more nights, and soon they're beginning to feeling more like a couple than two people engaged in nothing more than a sexually satisfying fling. Both Shay and Hugh know what it's like to have a parent that they couldn't rely on and whose mistakes they were still paying for. He had no other choice but to agree to steal cars for the man his father owed money to while Shay always found it difficult to turn her mother away--the mother who was far too busy selfishly having fun and partying to take care of her daughter and who had no qualms making her only child feel as if she wasn't worthy of any man's affection or attention.

This was such a fantastic read, one that kept me engaged from start to finish. I adored Shay, who was shy and unassuming but had that feisty spirit she didn't know she unleashed when push came to shove. And what can I say about Hugh? I'm not a huge fan of men with facial hair, but he happens to be one among a very select group that had me contemplating being more open to it. His love for his mother, brother, and sister had him ready to put his own freedom at risk just to make sure they were okay. Add to that his ability to make Shay see how wonderfully special she was and I have no problem adding this man to my list of potential book boyfriends. The story was fast-paced and this had a cast of supporting characters that I can't wait to get to know more about as the series progresses, especially Joe Colton and Adam Grady, Hugh's brother and best friend, respectively, and Kayla Green, Shay's best friend. The bar is set high for the next two books, Spin (Joe's story) and Slide (Adam's story), thanks to the five-star read that is Swerve. ♥
