Review: Bachelor for Hire by Charlene Sands (Bachelor Auction Returns #1)

Tule Publishing's multi-authored Bachelor Auction six-book series was a favorite of mine last year and now we've got four books to peruse with Bachelor Auction Returns. This time around, we've got four former high school football teammates who come together to help out a bachelor auction organized to help out a cause near and dear to their former coach's heart. We start things off with Cody Matthews, who left Marietta after high school to enter the Army and then went on to start a security and protection agency with his best friend in Texas. Now back in his hometown to help out his uncle on their family ranch, Cody is surprised to find Hayley Dawn O'Malley standing in front of him after nearly a dozen years since she left town and broke his heart in the process. She tells him she needs his help with a would-be stalker, but while Cody never turned his back on Hayley before, he does so this time around. When Hayley finds out about the bachelor auction that Cody's part of, she decides this is her chance to have Cody to herself.
This was a second chance romance of sorts, even though Cody and Hayley were never really in any sort of committed relationship in high school. They were good friends and he was more than willing to do almost anything for her, and I couldn't help but think that maybe she took that for granted, so that when she really did need him this time around, he was wary to offer his services. The reasons for his refusal, however, go deeper than a teenage broken heart, and it's that one particular reason that's part and parcel of why he wants to keep his distance from her. When they spend time together during their "date", it's pretty obvious where the weekend will lead, but can anything more really come from it, what with Hayley being an award-winning and much in demand actress and Cody still deciding on what he wants to do after a life-changing incident left him feeling guilty? There's a twist in the story that I didn't see coming, and I liked that there was that touch of surprise. Bachelor for Hire was a sweet love story and garners four stars. ♥
