Awakening is an M/M novella that starts off the Crossing Desires series written by author Megs Pritchard. The story starts off with Tony waking up in an unfamiliar bedroom and feeling the aftereffects of a night fueled by alcohol. He soon realizes that he spent the night with someone, only it wasn't a woman, and this has him scrambling to leave as quickly as possible. What follows is Tony trying to deal with his confusion and the ramifications of his actions on a night he can barely remember. It's his twin brother who's gay while Tony has made no secret of his preference of women. But now he can't help but wonder what his one night with a nameless stranger could mean. Can he reconcile the man he's always believed himself to be with the surprising discoveries he's just beginning to uncover about himself today?

This was certainly an interesting novella, and that opening chapter definitely captured my attention. What would it be like to be a heterosexual man and then wake up to the knowledge that you just spent the night with someone of the same sex? Tony's uncertainty was perfectly understandable but he got the minimum amount of sympathy from his twin Zeke, who seemed to get more of a kick out of the fact that Tony was, at the very least, bisexual. Zeke seemed to be overdoing it at times, pushing Tony to be with Will, the man he spent that drunken night with. You would think that as a gay man himself, he would know better than to pressure someone--his twin nonetheless--to deal with his newly discovered sexuality then and there. Seriously? If Zeke were my brother (well, even he wasn't), I would have smacked him for his insensitivity.

As far as Will was concerned, there really wasn't much about him that I found the least bit appealing. He held Tony's watch hostage, hoping to go another round with Tony. When Tony informed him that he had never been with a man before their forgettable time together, Will stated that the news wasn't surprising. But then, later he says that Tony's behavior made him think that Tony had done that sort of thing before and he would never have thought Tony wasn't gay. Huh? That contradictory statement plus several instances in the text where it felt repetitious knocked off a couple of points in my overall rating. Tony's behavior was at times humorous, but then it was also rather understandable since he was still coming to grips with his "sudden" bisexuality. I'd like to see what happens next, and I'm giving Awakening 3.5 stars. ♥
