Review: Lucky Scars by Kerry Heavens

“Maybe our scars kept up from moving on, so that we could find each other. Perhaps we should be grateful for them. Maybe they are our lucky scars.”

It's been more than a year and a half since I last experienced the awesomeness that is Kerry Heavens's writing. However, I thank my lucky stars, because that awesomeness is back! It comes in the form of a uniquely haunting and hopeful story about two strangers who literally bump into each other and whose stars slowly but surely align as their years-old wounds begin to heal. If you've never read anything by this author before, may I humbly suggest--seriously insist!--that you make Lucky Scars your initial foray into her writing? This was more than a friends-to-lovers romance--this is what a modern classic of a love story reads like, and it continues to stay with me days later.

Beatrix Lawson's gaming company is doing well--well enough that she's got people interested in buying it from her. But Bea wants to make the sort of impact that will make it clear that, given a choice, she has no plans of going anywhere but up. For that, though, she needs something...extra--something...MORE, which is why she's been hunting high and low for the digital artist only known by his moniker of "Starman". The last thing she expects on the morning of an important meeting is to be caught in a sex fog with a hot guy in a suit and to turn into the Beadozer when she takes another gorgeous guy down and douses him in hot coffee. Jonathan the Suit is persistent and gives her pause; but when it comes to Ziggy Jones, Bea is tempted to actually press "play" and move forward. But with a heart as scarred as hers, is Bea ready to risk it on a guy who seems to have far more secrets and scars?

There are slow burn romances that are so agonizingly slow that the urge to skim can be difficult to resist. Then there are those slow burn stories that entice and at times lull you into a state of complacency before the heart-tugging begins. By then, there's no turning back because you're already invested--just like in the case of Bea and Ziggy, Kerry Heavens's Sparkles and Starman. I was all in with these two, and goodness me, but how they're tale of loss and love and truly living again got to me. I read this novel in one sitting, and by the time I was done, I wanted to give it another go, this time, with a tissue or two on stand-by. Heavens brought an original spin and creative touch to a well-worn trope and her readers are reaping the rewards. Lucky Scars is a 2018 top read. Five-plus stars. ♥
