Review: Whiskey Secrets by Carrie Ann Ryan (Whiskey and Lies #1)

Whiskey Secrets is the first novel in Whiskey and Lies, the latest Montgomery Ink spin-off series from bestselling author Carrie Ann Ryan. This spin-off is centered on Tabby Collins's brothers--Fox, Dare, and Loch--who were all introduced in Tabby and Alex Montgomery's book, Ink Exposed, the sixth full-length novel in the Montgomery Ink series. The first book is focused on the middle brother, Dare, a former cop who leaves the police force after a tragedy that reminds him just how fragile life can be. He returns to his hometown of Whiskey, Pennsylvania and takes the family-owned Whiskey Bar and Restaurant off his parents' hands. Four years on, things are going well for him, but his parents' announcement that they would bring in an innkeeper to manage renovations and guest relations carries with the kind of change Dare has never been a fan of. Along with that change is the innkeeper herself, Kenzie Owens, a city girl who doesn't hesitate to speak her mind. Dare and Kenzie start off as adversaries, but soon their attraction takes over. Will their secrets and Dare's responsibilities as a father derail their romance?

I quite liked this new series starter from Carrie Ann Ryan! Dare and Kenzie may have seen one another as the enemy in the beginning, but these two had to work their way into trusting one another and giving their trust in return. There was quite a bit of tension between them, sexual and otherwise, making these two far from boring. These two had ghosts from their pasts that they were dealing with, and I wouldn't consider one more haunting than the other because each clearly and deeply changed Dare and Kenzie, respectively. Aside from the romance, my favorite thing about the book had to be the family dynamic within the Collins clan. Even with Tabby all the way in Denver with her fiancée, it was obvious that this was a close-knit family that loved one another but they also didn't hesitate to put each other in their place if need be. Same goes for how things played out between Dare and his ex when it came to the custody of their son. Overall, Whiskey Secrets had romance, sex, drama, and even some humor and suspense thrown into the mix, making for a rather good 4.5-starred read. I look forward to book two! ♥
