Review: My Perfect Mistake by Kelly Siskind (Over the Top #1)

"Excuse me?"

"Let's see...you didn't even glance uphill when you merged onto my run and won't admit it. I make a joke about what you're eating, and you rant at me for twenty minutes. You launch my pole over the chair and won't cop to it. And it takes blackmail for you to admit you got off last night. So, yeah, the word bull-headed comes to mind. And obstinate. And ornery." He leans close, his voice just a whisper. "And passionate. We can add to the list later, if you want." With a wink, he sits back.

Her first novel caught my attention and made me curious how she would follow it up. Well, with the release of the Over the Top series starter, My Perfect Mistake, author Kelly Siskind has made it pretty damn clear that she's more than poised to take over the romantic comedy genre. Take note: this is just her sophomore release and if she's adept at weaving a hilarious yet heartfelt love story between two people who can't stand each other yet can't stand by away from one another even more, I wouldn't be surprised if she continues riding the wave she's on and dishing out stories that are not only worth reading once but worth re-reading anytime you want a love story and characters that are both entertaining and endearing.

We've got two sets of three best friends each, but this first book is about Kolton and Shay. He's a twenty-nine-year-old single father who still mourns the wife he lost seven years ago and is part owner of a successful clothing company, and she's a twenty-five-year-old interior designer who feels as if she wasted five years of her life with her cheater of an ex-boyfriend. These two literally crash into one another and from that moment on, they become adversaries--adversaries who have one hell of an intense attraction and connection to one another. Their Aspen fling was supposed to be exactly that--a fling. Is it even possible for them to have more? Between the distance, secrets, and past, do they have a shot at forever?

The bitching and button-pushing between these two was the most attention-grabbing kind of foreplay I've come across in a long while. These two made me laugh (a lot), squee (a lot), and had my heart squeezing in empathy (a whole lot). Amidst the antics and hilarity, they've both got issues that they're trying to deal with and I would think it difficult to really get to know all the essentials about another person in the short amount of time these two had in Aspen. But sometimes, all it takes is that initial connection, that one moment where your heart knows that its found its perfect pair, and that's what happened here. There were times that these two were so frustratingly stubborn but still you know that they do belong together.

Now, I loved Kolton and Shay, but it was difficult to not notice the two other pairs in the story: Lily and Sawyer and Raven and Nico. I've already got the next two books of this series on my never-ending to-be-read list. No, let me amend that; I have anything and everything that Kelly Siskind has up her sleeve on my to-be-read list. Romantic comedies are hit and miss with me, so when I find an author that's able to make me laugh more than once while I'm reading a book they've written, I'm going to be watching out for them. In this case, however, it's two books in a row, and now we've got ourselves a series that looks like it's set to be a modern rom-com classic. I'm so highly recommending My Perfect Mistake and give it five-plus stars. ♥
