Review: Manties in a Twist by J.A. Rock (The Subs Club #3)

Note: This ARC was provided by Riptide Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Game. Set. Point. Match. Manties in a Twist is officially my top book in The Subs Club series so far, though with the last book featuring my favorite among the frisky foursome, I'll have to wait till June to decide which one takes the cake. Ah, Kamen, Kamen, Kamen. Where do I even begin? Kamen Pelletor has often come off as the go-to guy when it comes to needing a laugh or to lighten the mood when discussions get too serious during a Subs Club meeting. He's irreverent but don't make the mistake of thinking that his opinions and feelings are irrelevant, something that people around him have the tendency of doing. Yes, he's got a pretty face, and yes, his sense of humor is akin to that of a kid, but there have already been glimpses of the man behind the easy grin and silly suggestions. Here in the third and latest novel in the series, fans and readers get to know Kamen even better, and if you don't walk away from the book realizing that there's depth to the guy than you're probably far shallower than you assumed Kamen to be.

The loss of Hal was a devastating blow to Kamen and his other best friends, Gould, Miles, and Dave and even two years after Hal's senseless albeit accidental death, the four seem to still struggle to find their footing in a world without their fifth member. But they've moved forward in some ways, with Dave and Miles in their own relationships with D and Drix, respectively. Now, even Kamen is happily living with Ryan and it's the first time he's ever been committed to a partner. Kamen relishes spending time with Ryan, a fact that his friends, especially Dave, appears to not be too thrilled about. Poor Kamen finds himself stuck between his boyfriend and his best friends, all of whom he loves deeply. They all deserve to be happy, so why is it that when his turn finally comes, it's almost as if he's being made to feel guilty over it. He's always been supportive of his best friends, and would drop anything to be there for him. Shouldn't they be willing to do the same thing for him? Is he going to have to choose between Ryan and his friends?

There were several times that this book brought me to tears--tears from too much laughing. I promise you, there was a mix of silent but non-stop laughter and full-on snorting and thigh-slapping. The four friends have always been able to make me laugh before, but because this is Kamen we're talking about here, the antics he gets himself into are sometimes so absurd that I picture them in my head and can't help but laugh like there's no tomorrow. But this book wasn't just about levity. The lingering issue of Hal's death is slowly but surely being resolved, but I understand how difficult it is to move on from any sort of loss. This being Kamen's first relationship, I get why he felt pulled in different directions but I also get how his friends felt, as Dave aptly put it during their confrontation. Kamen learned things about his boyfriend, his best friends, even evil Cinnamon, but most of all, he learned things about himself. Someone give Thunder Canyon the winning garland. He deserves it. Five plus-stars for Kamen and Manties in a Twist. ♥
