Review: Igniting Vic by Freya Barker (Police and Fire: Operation Alpha; On Call #8)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Buoni Amici Press.

Igniting Vic is the eighth book in the On Call romantic suspense series, which is part of the Police and Fire: Operation Alpha book universe from bestselling author Susan Stoker's Aces Press, from Freya Barker. I haven't had the opportunity to read any of the seven previous books in the said series, but that didn't take away from my overall enjoyment of the story in this newly published novel, nor did I feel like I was lost in any way, shape, or form. That being said, I confess that now I find myself extremely curious, and have the first seven titles, all of which are in Kindle Unlimited, on my never-ending to-be-read list.

When firefighter Victoria Paige finds a corpse that's been tied up and burnt on a bed at a scene she and her crew are sent to, she knows she will never be able to get that image out of her head. William Evans is the first detective to arrive, and he provides solace right when Vic needs it. A recent transplant from Denver, Bill's taken aback by how a crime this savage has made its way to a small town like Durango. Even worse, it turns out that this is only the beginning--they've got a serial killer on their hands. Being with Vic is the bright spot in an undeniably dark situation, but when the killer decides to get too close for comfort, Bill knows that he's in a race to put a stop to the spree before it costs him Vic.

Freya Barker delivers yet another intense read with Vic and Bill's story. She knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat when it comes to the more suspenseful parts of the story, while pulling back just enough when highlighting the growing romance between the main characters. As always, I loved that these two were older, Vic being 40 and Bill ten years older, and have had a lot of life experience, yet still have a lot of living left to do, except now, they do it together. Igniting Vic was a winner of a read, and it gets five stars.
