Review: The Subs Club by J.A. Rock (The Subs Club #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Riptide Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

It's been over a year since David and his three best friends lost the fifth member of their group after a scene go wrong in their favorite BDSM haunt. When he finds out that the dominant that was with Hal was allowed to return to the club as a member, David decides to put together a private blog that not only allows submissives to discuss their thoughts and feelings about the dominants they've been with, but also gives them the opportunity to rate them. David and his friends hope the Subs Club blog will help weed out the douche bag doms from the good ones and help guide subs to make better choices as to who they partner up with. One of those who David believes falls into the "douche" category is the Disciplinarian. While his suspicions about the Disciplinarian appear to be true in the beginning, David begins to discover that there's more the guy than his pornstache, slight paunch, and rigid disciplinary ways. He could be David's chance at "real" discipline but what happens when the Disciplinarian learns about the Subs Club?

I was introduced to J.A. Rock's writing by way of her co-written Playing the Fool series with Lisa Henry, which I loved, and when I found out that she was going solo with a new series, I looked forward at the prospect of experiencing her storytelling as a solo writer. Now that I'm done reading The Subs Club, the first novel in the series by the same title, I must say that the anticipation I felt before the book was released was well rewarded. With four friends who start a blog called The Subs Club, the four-book series follows each one of them as they live their lives as submissives who are looking for the dominants with whom they fit. Inspired by the untimely death of their best friend while engaging in a sanctioned scene with a dominant, the blog has articles written by the four remaining best friends and one of their close friends who is still new to the BDSM scene. What the blog hopes to achieve is to provide well-founded knowledge and create dialogue among submissives. But you know what they said about good intentions...

I loved the fact that J.A. Rock took the story in a direction that I've never seen a BDSM-related story take before. There's a lot of humor in the book, and I'm not talking about slapstick-styled humor. It's done in a lighthearted and intelligent manner, and I found myself either smiling or snickering to myself several times throughout the book. David (or maybe I should type that in purely lowercase letters) is snarky and passionate when it comes to his friendships, loyal to each of his four best friends, including to the memory of the one that passed away. When he meets David, a.k.a. the Disciplinarian, he expects to be the submissive to put this dominant in his place by having his first impression proven true, only to find out that his dream of "real" discipline could become reality with the man with a pornstache. David's relationships with his friends and D are fascinatingly fun to read about. With an attention-grabbing series starter like The Subs Club, the bar has been set high for Miles's, Kamen's, and Gould's stories. Five stars. ♥
