Review: Stealing His Heart by Diane Alberts (Shillings Agency #2)

They shared one memorable night that saw Jake Forsythe wake away from Tara Harris before he could take things further. He didn't feel as if he deserved her then, and even after eight years apart, he still doesn't think he deserves to be with her. Unfortunately, Jake needs Tara and when he can't get her to immediately agree to help him, he decides to blackmail her. He's got video showing her breaking and entering into a home--the very home that belongs to a client of the Shillings Agency and one that had a security system installed by Jake himself, the very same system Tara was able to bypass with ease. But Tara lives by a code, one that has her taking items from shady individuals and returning them to their rightful owners, and the last thing she wants to do is to provide any sort of assistance that will benefit the man whose home she was breaking into in the video. Forced to spend time together until Tara breaks, Jake is no longer able to keep his distance from her, but will she be able to accept him, dark dominance and all?

Stealing His Heart is the second book in bestselling author Diane Alberts's Shillings Agency series and is a second chance romance of sorts, although Robin Hood-like cat burglar Tara Harris and former Marine and now security expert Jake Forsythe were never really in any relationship beyond being close friends before he left. The idea of having a criminal and a law-abiding security specialist working together is interesting, and because these two have history, it's like their becoming more is a long-time coming. There's a fair amount of tension because of Tara's refusal to give Jake the information that he wants, and I certainly didn't appreciate some of the things he chose to do to get her to help out. His switching from the Jake that he is now and the Jake he once was sometimes abrupt, but it's understandable why it's difficult to peg down which one is the real Jake because it's clear his time in the Corps irrevocably affected him. The last couple of chapters were my favorite and Stealing His Heart was an overall enjoyable read. Four stars. ♥
