Review: The Queen B* and the Homecoming King by Crista McHugh (The Queen B* #3)

Note: This ARC was provided by RockStar Lit PR in exchange for an honest review.

She may finally be in a relationship with the Eastline High's number one jock and most coveted senior, but Queen B* Alexis Wyndham has set ground rules that she expects star quarterback Brett Pederson to follow: 1. No obligations to spend every waking moment with each other, 2. No public displays of affection while at Eastline High, and 3. Absolutely, under no circumstances, will she ever go to the Homecoming dance. While Brett seems intent on breaking those first two rules every chance again, Alexis refuses to budge on the last one, which would require her to spend time with Brett's friends, some of whom she's already featured on her blog. But her relationship status isn't the only thing that's changed within a matter of weeks, and the Queen B* will have to choose which changes to welcome and which to mess around with.

The Queen B* and the Homecoming King is the third book in bestselling author Crista McHugh's young adult (YA) series entitled The Queen B*. Here we have Alexis Wyndham and Brett Pederson finally (!!!) taking their unexpected friendship slash flirtation to the next level by agreeing to be in a relationship. The idea of Eastline High's very own Queen B* and the guy most likely to become the next Homecoming King becoming a couple may raise more than a few eyebrows, but this was a pairing that was a long time (two books long) coming. Alexis is snarky and makes it her life's mission to put people in their place, and Brett is easygoing and takes things as they come, without trying to actively rock the boat. They're able to balance each other out and they somehow enable the other to see whatever situation from a different perspective.

Here, we see how Alexis and Brett make the transition into girlfriend-boyfriend, and how those around them react to the coupling. Then there are situations involving Alexis's two best friends, Richard Wang--who is trying to get on the debate team and is dealing with a hater leaving nasty notes--and Morgan Kurlander--who is pissed upon hearing that Alexis went out with the guy she had slept with previously. The mystery part of the story is centered on finding out who's been leaving homophobic and derogatory notes in his locker, which wasn't too difficult although there's definitely more than one potential suspect. I love how Alexis and Brett aren't just a couple in a committed relationship but still have their sleuthing skills intact, proving that these two really do work together when it comes to battling Eastline High crime.

This is supposed to be the end to the series, but I find myself wanting more time with not just Alexis and Brett, but also Richard and even Taylor, who has grown on me. The school year isn't over, so there's no harm in hoping that maybe there's still potential for the series to continue. Heck, a lot can happen since it's their senior year, i.e. the prom, SATs, graduation, prepping for college applications, etc. Yes, this is me refusing to let go, but if this is, indeed, the end of the series, I like that it ended on a positive and sweet note. After all, Brett and Alexis are still young and a happily-for-now is far more realistic than a happily-ever-after. I've enjoyed the series and this third book had that snarky sweetness that has become the hallmark of The Queen B* books. I'm giving The Queen B* and the Homecoming King 4.5 stars out of five. ♥
