Review: The Fix Up by Tawna Fenske (First Impressions #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Benjamin Langley is the kind of guy who prefers working behind the scenes. He's never been comfortable hobnobbing with executives or working on his golf game just to nail down a business deal. But when his father hands over the reins of Langley Enterprises and makes him CEO at thirty-one, Ben feels like he has no choice but to step up. He needs to look and act more like the head of the company, and the best person to help him with his makeover is Holly Colvin, owner of First Impressions, a PR and marketing company known for branding and re-branding. Holly's hesitant because she's already attracted to him, but she desperately needs the money he's offering to re-finance her loan. She can bring out the inner alpha and make him look like one, but can she reconcile the new Ben with the sweet, geeky one she's now falling for?

The Fix Up is the first book in the First Impressions romantic comedy series from and is my first read by Tawna Fenske. The title of the series is apt since this story not only gave me my first impression of the author's writing but also of how the rest of the series will look like. There's a lot of humorous romancing that goes on between main characters Ben Langley and Holly Colvin, a couple that worked really well together, having that chemistry that I always look for in love stories. I liked the idea of Holly making Ben over but falling for the guy that he's always been, who was great and just needed a bit of sprucing up to take him to the next level as a CEO. There was quite a lot of business jargon turned into sexual innuendo in the conversations Ben and Holly have, to the point that it got to be a bad case of too much of a good thing.

Ben is a really intelligent guy who's got the whole Clark Kent thing going on on the outside and I've always said that I'd choose Clark Kent over Superman any day of the week. I liked that he was sweet in a totally geeky kind of way, making him earn bonus book boyfriend points. Holly liking him even before the makeover was a good thing, but her first marriage has caused her to be wary of men who see women in a traditional (translation: sexist) light, which was strange since Ben was so not like that (though his jerk of a father is a different story). Overall, the story and main characters were entertaining and I'm already curious about two supporting characters: Parker and Miriam, Ben's and Holly's best friends, respectively, though I do hope they get paired off with other people just for something fresh. Four stars for The Fix Up. ♥
