Review: Say You're Mine by Diane Alberts (Shillings Agency #5)

Note: This ARC was provided by Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Former Navy SEAL Steven Thomas hates liars, having seen what one lie can cost. The guilt he feels when he failed to stand up to a superior whose actions were suspect led to the deaths of his team, and now, Steven has been trying to drown it all out with one drink after another. When his drinking begins to become something of concern, his sister and his best friend turn to the one person the think can drag him out of his funk: his longtime best friend Lauren Brixton. While it may be true that they've both wondered what crossing the line between friendship and more may feel like, it isn't until they actually do that everything changes. They're trying to maneuver the new path their relationship is on, but for the first time, they both feel that the other is worth the risk. With promises made, Steven and Lauren become more than friends, but one small lie that's been kept secret could spell the end, especially when it's perceived as an act of deception, it may well lead to broken trusts and friendships and two broken hearts.

Say You're Mine is the fifth and latest book in the Shillings Agency series by bestselling author Diane Alberts, and turns the spotlight on Steven Thomas and Lauren Brixton, who have been best friends since grade school. Steven trusts Lauren to never lie to him, and Lauren trusts Steven to never abandon her, and while neither of those commitments have been tested in the past, once they evolve into lovers, things irrevocably change. I liked Steven and Lauren together, and their curiosity about taking their friendship further or even just sharing a kiss is proof that there's always been the possibility of something more between them. The awkwardness they feel after they first sleep together makes this a far more realistic story, because there's so much history based on friendship already there that they risk losing. Steven was already a memorable supporting character in the fourth book, and delving into his story has made him a favorite of mine in the series. With moments both sweet and steamy, Say You're Mine was a 4.5-star read. ♥
