Review: "If I Say Yes" by Brandy Jellum (Say Something #1)

Elizabeth Lewis found the body of her murdered mother lying in a pool of blood and barely escaped being her father's next victim. Six years since that horrific event, Elizabeth Lewis is now Liza Winter. Gone are her partying and free-wheeling days. She now works as a literary agent but is finding it difficult to sign her first client because she hates the division she's assigned to--romance. Her new boss, who just happens to be the agency's CEO's nephew, wants her to give the division, and him, a chance at proving romance is real.

Reid Harder is immediately intrigued by the literary agent introduced to him by his uncle. She's prickly and defensive but she's also beautiful and intelligent. He wants to show her that she has what it takes to be a good literary agent in the romance division, but he also wants her to give him a shot as something more than her boss. But they're both keeping secrets from one another, secrets that could prevent them from exploring the possibilities. Plus someone's just as, if not more, interested in Liza Winter. Someone deadly.

If I Say Yes is the first book in the Say Something series by Brandy Jellum and is a romantic suspense novel about a young woman hiding from her past but its a past that doesn't want to remain hidden. The premise of the story itself is interesting and one that had me clicking "Request" on NetGalley. The book certainly had promising potential, potential which was showcased in glimpses in the text, but there were moments that the storytelling felt disjointed and there were texts that were unnecessary and prolonged.

As far as the characters were concerned, I didn't feel there was an actual connection between Liza and Reid until the last third of the book. I was getting whiplash from both of them, especially Reid with his extreme shifts in mood, affecting my own personal connection. It was difficult for me to feel empathy for her and he had this pushy, creepy vibe going. I mean, hello, he was her boss and he was being overly insistent about her going out with him and even threatened her position in the agency because she had refused him.

There were certainly some good things about the book, especially when it came to the twists, though I did figure out who was stalking Liza early on and thought signing the threatening notes as "A" felt too Pretty Little Liars-esque to me. I also liked Liza's best friend Elias "Eli" Caraway because he was the one guy who seemed to make sense and wasn't too exaggerated. I think with more editing, If I Say Yes would have been a much better read, though the cliffhanger at the end definitely got my attention. This gets 3.5 stars. ♥
