Review: Homefrontby Jessica Scott (Homefront #1)

First Sergeant Gale Sorren has always put the army first, a fact that cost him his marriage to the only woman he's ever loved and being able to watch his daughter grow up. Years later, he finally musters up the courage to put in a request to be stationed at Fort Hood in order to be closer to the family he's missed but was never there for. He doesn't know how he'll be received by his ex-wife and teenage daughter but he wants to, at the very least, begin and try to make up for all the years he lost without them.

Melanie Francesco is at a loss when it comes to her daughter Jamie, finding it difficult to completely trust her but constantly living in fear that what happened two years ago will happen yet again. She's tried to provide the best life she possibly can for herself and Jamie but it doesn't seem enough and she can't help but wonder if she's failing as a mother. When Mel's ex-husband appears before her, she's shocked and questions why he would suddenly show up now after having not be around for far too long.

Gale can see that Jamie's more than a handful and that Mel desperately needs someone to back her up when it comes to raising their daughter. He doesn't want to overstep his boundaries but he also wants to show Mel that he's here now, ready to for them to show a united front when it comes to Jamie. But with too many years of living with a broken heart and being a single parent, will Mel be able to trust Gale to be there for their daughter and to risk falling in love with the one man who's owned her heart?

Homefront is the first book in the series of the same title by bestselling author Jessica Scott and it is a contemporary romance with military theme and a second chance love story between a soldier and his civilian ex-wife. While there's no denying that there's romance in the story, I feel that at the very heart of this book is the story of a family that's fractured but not completely broken and that all three members--Gale, Mel, and Jamie--need to heal as individuals and as a unit in order to become whole.

The characters in this book are multi-dimensional, making me want to truly find out what makes them tick and what their vulnerabilities are. None of them are ideal or perfect, each one with issues that they're trying to deal with as best they can. The story itself is as complex as the characters, ensuring that my attention and interest were engaged all throughout. Homefront was a moving tale of love and redemption and one that was written quite beautifully. I'm giving this first book in a series five stars. ♥
